burton folly

Burton Pynsent Monument on Troy Hill in Curry Rivel, Somerset, was designed by Capability Brown, architect for William Pitt as a monument to Sir William Pynsent, and built in 1757. This folly is a classical style tower monument around 42m high and clad in Portland stone. The tower itself is set on a square plinth from which visitors can take in quite wonderful views across the Somerset levels. Several public footpaths make the tower very accessible and a visit is recommended to all! Contact us if you have comments or questions on this rather super folly.  VIEW PICTURES OF LANGPORT

Local legend has it that a cow managed to roam its way to the top of the stairs that run up through the column, not once but three times!
