Although built in 1822 Stembridge windmill was constructed using stones from an earlier mill that stood nearby. There are four wooden sails present but the mill stopped working by wind in 1897 when it was converted to steam power. The windmill is constructed of roughly coursed local Blue Lias (a type of Limestone), with a gabled thatched roof over a weather-boarded superstructure. Inside there are four floors, and currently incomplete gear, which drove two pairs of grinding stones. The tower itself stands some 26 feet (7.9 m) high, and sits on an older mill mound. The sails were attached to a manually wound chain mechanism, which is now absent. Outside is a small building, which was the former bakery, and in the grounds a large detached millers cottage of a similar age to the windmill. More about Windmills.
